RESIDENCE

by Paweł Borkowski

I've been invited for a three month residency in the Witryna, a display window gallery in Warsaw. I've decided to locate, in the exhibition space, my father's Panasonic fax machine, and connect it to a telephone line. Each day I made a drawing and telecopied it to the gallery.
I have filled the popular artist-in-residency formula a work of art made of fax paper – paper which self-destroys when exposed to daylight and high temperature.
Considering my existence in the specific space of the Witryna gallery and in the city’s visual culture, I placed myslef in opposition to commercial billboards by sending single, anticonsumer oriented, fixed graphic images, which formed, jointly, an artistic comic book titled “Mutiny of matter”. The comic book consists of the main drawing (180x30 cm) which depicts an allegoric battle between humans and their needs stemming from the geopolitical situation, nad of a description presenting the genesis thereof.
Being interested in establishing various forms of cooperation, I was distributing, over the last month of my residence, the fax number among different artists and inviting them to send their texts and images as well.
