Paintings for wallets 2012-2017
by Cristina Garrido
Paintings for wallets 2012-2017 is a project that starts at the exhibition ICEBERG at Matadero Madrid. It is a painting exhibition in which the pieces will be traveling Worldwide inside the wallets of 75 people for a period of five years.
On 7th April 2012, each week I started to acquire Spanish National Lottery tickets from the Thursday and Saturday draws. Each ticket was chosen with random numbers. On the front side of each ticket, I create a painting that is completed before each draw takes place. The layer of paint hides the number and, therefore, the exchange value of the Lottery ticket, also invalidating the exchange of this ticket for money.
This process continued until the Extraordinary Christmas draw (22nd December), when a total of seventy-five paintings were completed.
I have given each of these paintings to a different person and asked that he or she keeps it inside their wallet or purse until 2017. After these five years, all the paintings will be collected and shown, for the first time, altogether in an exhibition and a publication, where all the names of the bearers will be revealed.
