Velatura
by Dragos Badita
The video “Velatura” shows an old woman that is burning the autumn grass, so that it can grow anew in the spring. Firstly, I was attracted to the painterly quality of the smoke that gradually fills the image, but, in time, the work gained more and more meaning for me, up to a point in which I feel it sums up my view on life so far. Briefly: the cycle of life goes on indefinitely, it is blind and has no purpose; individual life on the other hand, is transient, conscious, and seeks purpose. The tragic thing is that we’re built in such a way, that all our struggle and fulfillment is directed towards perpetuating the blind cycle of life, which has no regard for our own individual existence. And when we’re no longer useful for reproducing it, we’re dumped; our cells stop regenerating and our body decays. Life is like a fire that burns up the living beings in order to maintain itself, while luring them toward illusory goals.
