Removals
by Cristina Garrido
Removals (2009) is a video which shows an action that took place in one of the stands in IKEA´s store of San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid) in December 2009.
Intervening in a fragment of what could be a living room, covering, clandestinely, some of the pieces of furniture shown there with bed linens taken from the shop, I sough to transform that scenery into a room of an uninhabited house. At the same time, my intention was to block the visibility of the commercial exhibition space.
Introducing the old domestic ritual of covering the furniture of a house with bed linens, during the time of absence of the inhabitants of a house, into the context of IKEA, we realize how anochronistic this has become; the reproduction of a lost habit in the space which caused its disappearance.
After the action in the store, I made a series of interventions on the information flyers distributed in the shop, with the aim of veiling and wrapping the pieces of furniture shown in them.
Through the application of a veil on this functional drawings I sought to invent a possible past and speculate on a future for each of this objects which don´t have a history.
