Dragos Badita
I think my interest in painting stems from an intense awareness of the passage of time, that urged me to deal with the issue somehow. I needed to resolve my religious tendency to devalue all things transitory, which is coupled with my anti-religious belief that there is nothing eternal. So, I paint ephemeral things as if they will last forever. People that I know or see, snippets of things around me. I’m interested primarily just in their bare fact of being-there, like in a haiku; I don’t want to put them on any theoretical chess-board. I want them opaque and resilient to interpretation, just as reality is. There is a vision about life that slowly emerges from them, but, ideally, it’s a truth that is revealed by the things themselves, and not an idea in my head that is illustrated in a made-up image.
My work in other media, such as video and installation, stems from the limits that I set for myself in painting: my interest for philosophy and ideas doesn’t always find a good place in my painting. Also, I felt the need to engage with the issues of temporality in a so-called time based media (“so-called”, because everything is related to time, in one way or another).
