Alain Urrutia

My painting practice involves selecting pre-existing photographic images that have under no circumstances been chosen beforehand for their thematic nature. In this way everyday situations become aesthetically orientated objects. I never work under strict plans; every situation, every image and every object are susceptible of suddenly entering realm of art. Painting is founded on the exercise of revealing but my work shows a specific approach on surfaces that seeks to move away from a bluntness of photography, permuting elements or symbols into new relations.

For the last few years I have been producing a type of painting that is closely related to memory and to the construction of History. This stance refers to the former's fragile nature, a play of shadows with layers of black and whites that produce evanescent and sometimes unattainable images; Bleaching or darkening their colors, privileging certain details, cropping out the back story and leaving us with a freestanding painted scene that consciously courts enigma.
