Taking its name from Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 psychological thriller about a paranoid surveillance expert, The Conversation invites artists-in-residence at Hangar Barcelona to replicate and disturb the controlling dynamics of personal and public forms of surveillance. Occurring on 9 December 2015, The Conversation will feature installations and performances throughout Hangar by Andrea Gómez (Colombia), Ariadna Guiteras (Spain), Ciprian Homorodean (Romania), Antonio R. Montesinos (Spain) and Mario Santamaría (Spain).
Andrea Gómez will present a new audio-visual event responding directly to David Shire’s score for The Conversation, using collaged video and a live improvised soundtrack. Ariadna Guiteras continues her exploration of the gestural manifestations of control with a performance that recreates and abstracts movements accumulated from online beauty tutorials. Ciprian Homorodean will intervene into the architecture of Hangar, creating a series of window treatments responding to the ubiquitous bricked-up windows of abandoned building in Spain’s climate of economic crisis. Antonio R. Montesinos’ large-scale installation will elegantly make physical the position and blind spots of security cameras. Mario Santamaría will present "03:23" a 24-hour film that uses public-access webcams from time zones across the globe.
Lauren Wetmore is the inaugural Encura curator-in-residence at Hangar (Barcelona, ES), in association with Curators’ Network.
Hangar is a centre for art research and production located in Barcelona, Spain. Hangar’s mission is to support visual artists and other cultural agents during the different moments of their art production processes as well as to contribute to the best development of their projects. Hangar facilitates equipment, facilities, production assistance and a suitable context for free experimentation and knowledge transfer. Hangar is located in the Poblenou neighborhood in Barcelona and in a mid 19th Century that was originally designed for the textile industry.
